This is Valentine’s Day, a day for celebrating love. I can think of no greater love than the love of God. Fortunately, we have a song with that title. It has been around for a long time, and will surely continue to be popular in worship services.
When Bev Shea sang this song, he usually prefaced it with a poem:
As we stand on the rocky shore,
But out there, beyond our eyes’ horizon,
There’s more— there’s more.
We can only see a little of God’s loving…
A few rich treasures from His mighty store;
But out there—beyond, beyond the horizon,
There’s more—there’s more.
F. M. Lehman (Click for more info) 1917 The love of God is greater far Than tongue or pen can ever tell. It goes beyond the highest star And reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win, His erring child He reconciled And pardoned from his sin. Oh, love of God, how rich and pure, How measureless and strong. It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song. Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill And every man a scribe by trade, To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry, Nor could the scroll contain the whole Though stretched from sky to sky. Oh, love of God, how rich and pure, How measureless and strong. It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song. |
