Theme this week: Channels of Blessing
October 12, 2021 (Tuesday)
My dear Bible teacher in college, C. J. Humphrey, was fond of repeating a story to his classes about an anonymous man who saved a life. The story was taken from a newspaper and was about an automobile collision that left a driver injured, in pain, and trapped in his car. As the crowd gathered, everyone saw the agony on the driver’s face and heard him as he moaned in pain. But the doors were jammed, and no one could do anything for the man as they awaited the arrival of a rescue team. Then a huge man stepped forward from the spectators, seized the damaged door and, with superhuman strength, pulled the door from the car and rescued the injured man. News media came to the scene and the big man was asked how he had the strength to tear the door from the car. Dr. Humphrey always had tears in his eyes and choked up as he told us what the rescuer said to the reporter: “A fella doesn’t know what he can do until he sees a man a’hurtin’.”
Since I first heard that story, I’ve heard many like it, about how ordinary people found strength they did not know they had to help someone.
My professor always made the point that we as Christians need to see the pain in a person who does not know God. We need to share what we know about how the Lord helps those who need Him. Their greatest need is to know the Lord. The need to know that He cares about them and can come into their lives and change them for the better. They need to know how to be saved for all eternity. Christians have a testimony worth sharing about how they called on the Lord and found salvation. When we understand how much someone else needs the Lord, we can freely share the good news of salvation in Christ.
The song, “People Need the Lord,” helps us to understand this very basic need.
PEOPLE NEED THE LORD
Words:Greg Nelson
Music: Phil McHugh
1983
Every day they pass me by
I can see it in their eyes
Empty people filled with care
Headed who knows where?
On they go through private pain
Living fear to fear
Laughter hides their silent cries
Only Jesus hears
People need the Lord
People need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams
He’s the open door
People need the Lord
People need the Lord
When will we realize
People need the Lord?
We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right
What could be too great a cost
For sharing life with one who’s lost?
Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear
They must hear the words of life
Only we can share
People need the Lord
People need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams
He’s the open door
People need the Lord
People need the Lord
When will we realize
That we must give our lives
For people need the Lord
People need the Lord
Paul wrote in the New Testament that people need to believe in order to be saved. Then he said, “but first they need to hear.” In order to hear the gospel, someone must share the message. And that ‘someone’ could be you. The Bible says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so” (Psalm 107:2 KJV).
Let us share with others the best news ever given to this world — the news that God loves us and sent His Son to be our Savior. If we believe in Him, we will be saved.
