Grace Greater Than Our Sin

Theme this week: Songs of Marvelous Grace

October 7, 2021 (Thursday)

There is no greater love than the love of God for His creation. When God created the universe, including mankind, He said, “It is very good.” But humans exercised their God-given will to rebel against God, committing sinful acts. God did not give up on loving us, and showered us with His grace in spite of our sinfulness. His love for us may seem surprising and we are astonished that He would love us even though we have sinned and fallen short of His glory.

We are overwhelmed by the the marvelous and amazing love of God toward us sinners. The poet has expressed our feelings with these words: “Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the sky of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade…to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.”

In a miraculous way Jesus came from Heaven to become “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Though Jesus never sinned, He paid for our sins when He died in our place on a cruel Roman cross many years ago. “God made Him who knew no sin to become sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). “He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Corinthians 5:15).

Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!

GRACE GREATER THAN OUR SIN
Words, Julia H. Johnston
Music, Daniel B. Towner
1910

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.
Refrain:
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
Refrain

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide;
What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.
Refrain

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
Refrain
