The Book of Romans is a treatise on Justification by Faith. It gives in depth the answer to the question, “What must I do to be saved?” It also presents a simple plan by which a person can be saved. There are several scripture verses which can lead a person to Christ. Although removed from their context, they are easily discerned to be true to their context when considered together as “The Roman Road.” They are Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8, 10:9-10. They give us a clear outline of “how to be saved.”
Before considering the actual verses, let it be understood that each one of us is the object of God’s love. The “Roman Road” in its entirety is an expression of that love for us.
1. All of us are sinners by nature and by choice.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
2. The penalty for sin is spiritual death, now and eternally.
“For the wages of sin is death..” (Romans 6:23a).
3. Christ’s death, burial and resurrection provides forgiveness
“..but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 6:23b; Romans 5:8).
4.If we profess faith in Christ, we can be saved
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” Romans 10:9-10.
This, then is “The Roman Road.” When followed, it leads to eternal life in Christ. If you have not yet received the gift of salvation through faith in Christ, then, please, do it today.
“As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.’ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile–the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'” (Romans 10:11-13).
