Hebrews 11 – A Poem

Yesterday in our Sunday School class at Bethel Baptist Church, Ingleside, we studied the “Faith Chapter,” Hebrews 11. Later in the day, after thinking over that wonderful chapter of the Bible, I wondered if I could compose a poem that brings into focus the main ideas of the chapter, and the following poem is the result:

HEBREWS 11 – A POEM
We’re calling the roll of victory,
Of people who had faith,
Who believed in what they didn’t see
And so receive our praise.
(Hebrews 11:1-2)
We can believe, if we want to,
That God made the world out of nothing.
Now you don’t see it, now you do.
Now that is really something.
(Hebrews 11:3)
By faith Abel gave to God
A gift disliked by his brother,
So Cain killed Abel there on the sod
Where gifts contested each other.
(Hebrews 11:4)
By faith Enoch bypassed death
And was spared from earthly strife.
Because he pleased God with every breath
He was given immortal life.
(Hebrews 11:5-6)
By faith Noah told of God’s plan
To bring a flood to punish all sin.
He built an ark for himself and his clan
And they all found a place safe within.
(Hebrews 11:7)
By faith Abraham took a strange trip
To places unknown in the west.
He followed the plan he heard from God’s lips
For he knew that God knew what was best.
(Hebrews 11:8-10)
By faith he and Sarah, the love of his life,
Gave birth to a son–though too old.
They believed God, this man and his wife,
So today their story is told.
(Hebrews 11:11-12)
By faith Isaac fulfilled his part
In God’s plan for His chosen ones.
And Jacob, when dying, revealed his heart
To do God’s will, blessing his sons.
(Hebrews 11:17-21)
Joseph, when dying, spoke of God’s plan
To take all God’s people back home,
And Moses, the Promised, took hold of God’s hand
And led all the people who roamed.
(Hebrews 11:22-29)
Joshua and Rahab aided Jericho’s fall
And the people conquered the land.
Others who followed, one and all,
Followed God’s wonderful plan.
(Hebrews 11:30-31)

All of God’s faithful, martyrs and chiefs,
Shared in the victory in God’s promised land,
The faith they held, their cherished beliefs,
Placed them safely within God’s great hand.
(Hebrews 11:32-38)
These servants were blessed, because of their faith
But died with thoughts left to ponder.
A great day is coming , not forever delayed,
When we’re all with Jesus, Over Yonder.
(Hebrews 11:13-16;39-40)
