Seasons of Life

June 3, 2021 (Thursday)

Two days ago I wrote about summertime. I mentioned a song from Porgy and Bess. While browsing Youtube music, I found the song performed by the Annie Moses band, a family that can be comfortable in any kind of music from classic to country, having sung in Carnegie Hall and Opryland. I think you will agree that the video below features “high class” music.

We have music from many sources describing a season of the year, and then we have Antonio Vivaldi’s Symphony of the Four Seasons, a beautiful musical expression of the seasons far too lengthy to be included in one of these blogs, but readily available on Youtube by a variety of orchestras.

Despite the fact that my preference of the seasons is summer, all four of the seasons are beautiful and necessary in God’s plan for this world. The same is true of the seasons of our lives, as we move through the passages of our journey from birth to the end of our days.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV).

I visited a lady in the hospital one day and I vividly recall her saying to her pastor, “Growing old is hell.” I much prefer Robert Browning’s words, ““Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, ‘A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!”

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL
Author: Cecil F. Alexander, Hymns for Little Children
1848

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

The purple headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them every one.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water,
To gather every day.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.

He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
