Tuna

A tuna fish salad sandwich hits the spot sometimes. It’s easy to prepare and one little can that holds 4 ounces of tuna will easily make two sandwiches. When I think of tuna fish, then, I usually think of a small can I can hold in my hand.
tunaman.jpgTuna are much bigger than that. The average Bluefin Tuna is 8 ft long and weighs more than 500 pounds. How many sandwiches would that make? I recall visiting the market in Naha, Okinawa, and seeing a truck unload tuna in the street. It was a truckload of fishes, each one bigger than either of the men who were unloading them. It was a scene similar to the one pictured at right, but the fishes were stacked in the truck bed, and laid in the street one or two at a time.
At only 52 calories per ounce, cooked, tuna can help out with weight control.
If that sandwich you are holding has 2 ounces of tuna it it, then somewhere there are a lot of people eating the same fish, because one of those fishes may weigh over 500 pounds. Let’s see, eight 2oz-sandwiches=16 oz, which would be one pound, making a 500 pound fish produce, theoretically, 4000 sandwiches. That number of Subway sandwiches at $6 each would amount to $24,000 for sandwiches from one fish. Of course, homemade sandwiches would cost less.
Check my figures if you like, but please don’t tell me where I went wrong. I just write the blogs; I don’t defend them.
