Rain or Shine

We’ve had some beautiful days this week, but today’s forecast is for overcast and rain, getting cooler tonight.
That’s the way the weather is, right? Sometimes sunshine, sometimes rain. As a matter of fact that sounds like our lives.

Sometimes sunshine, sometimes rain
Sometimes gladness, sometimes pain

The Ink Spots of long ago sang, “Into each life some rain must fall, but too much is falling in mine.” Tevye (Fiddler on the Roof) prays: “Sometimes I think, when it gets too quiet up there, You say to Yourself, ‘What kind of mischief can I play on My friend Tevye?'” Yes, when nothing seems to be going our way, we complain, don’t we?
sunflowers.jpgPerhaps we need to sing, like Al Jolson and Bing Crosby, “Though April showers may come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May.” It may sound trite, but “when life hands you a lemon, you can make lemonade” and remember the little verse, “Two men looked out through the prison bars; one saw mud, the other saw stars.”
When it rains, we know very well that the sun will shine again. When we are in a serious dry spell, we know equally as well that it will rain again someday. That’s the way the weather works; that’s the way life works.
In the meantime, we are in charge of our thoughts, and we need to follow the suggestions of the Apostle Paul: “I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious–the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies” (Philippians 4:8 MSG).
Life goes on–rain or shine.
