The pyramids of Egypt are the tombs of the kings. When they died, their tombs were filled with treasures they would need as they traveled the afterlife. Centuries later, the archeologists explored the tombs, and every item lay exactly where it had been placed. In death, the Pharaohs found no need for material possessions. Nor does anyone else.
Jesus spoke of “Treasure in Heaven.” We know for sure he was not talking about gold, silver or precious stones, and certainly not about money of any kind. He was speaking of spiritual treasure: eternal reward linked to our lives here on the earth.
I’ve asked myself, “What is this treasure in Heaven?” I believe it is the capacity to enjoy and appreciate everything that Heaven offers. The treasure is spiritual, not material. As we get to know Jesus better in this life, we are preparing our hearts to have sweet communion with Him in Heaven, which is worth more than any earthly treasure we could have.
Jesus promised that He will say to His people at Judgment, “Enter into the joys of your Lord.” The good thoughts, kind deeds, acts of mercy, expressions of compassion, all kinds of love will be rewarded by our being given even more love, joy, and peace in Heaven. Our patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control create within us the kind of heart that enjoys Heaven to its fullest. Therein lies our treasure.
Our greatest heavenly treasure is Jesus Christ Himself. There we shall see Him in all His glory, and without our asking, all our questions will find answers in Him. We shall find meaning and purpose in serving Him forever and ever. That’s our precious treasure.
What I have shared today are my own personal reflections. What do you believe the “Treasure in Heaven” is?
