When Jesus entered Jericho, He healed two blind men. When he was leaving Jericho, it seems He healed two more blind man. When we compare the gospels of Mattthew, Mark and Luke, we may get a little confused about it. Nevertheless we seem always to focus on one blind man by the name of Bartimaeus. Perhaps that’s because he’s the only one named. More can be said about it, but I prefer going on with Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. And his healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus, at Jericho.
Bartimaeus heard the commotion as the crowd following Jesus was passing by, and when He heard that it was Jesus, He knew he had hope of being healed, so he cried out for Jesus to help him. The crowd drowned out his voice, and some of the disciples discouraged him, but he cried out the louder. So Jesus stopped and ordered the blind man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Sir,” he answered, “I want to see again.” Jesus said to him, “Then see! Your faith has made you well.” At once he was able to see, and he followed Jesus, giving thanks to God. When the crowd saw it, they all praised God.
I have a sermon about Bartimaeus that I have preached many, many times. Like most of my sermons, it has three points: 1.He realized his condition, 2. He called on the right person, and 3. He was not disappointed. As I talked about his blindness being healed, I preached about our spiritual blindness being healed, following those same three points. Simple. Easy to preach. Always well received. Sometimes resulting in people being saved. Praise the Lord.
Do you realize you need the Savior? Are you willing to call on Him to save you? You will not be disappointed if you do. Jesus is always ready to help. Call and He will answer.
THEN JESUS CAME
Words: Oswald J. Smith
Music: Homer Rodeheaver
1939
One sat alone beside the highway begging
His eyes were blind, the Light he could not see
He clutched his rags and shivered in the shadows
Then Jesus came and bade the darkness flee
Chorus
When Jesus comes the tempter’s power is broken
When Jesus comes, all tears are wiped away
He takes the gloom and fills my heart with glory
For all is changed when Jesus comes to stay.
“Unclean! Unclean!” the leper cried in torment,
The deaf, the dumb, in helplessness stood near;
The fever raged, disease had gripped its victim
Then Jesus came and cast out ev’ry fear.
Chorus
From home and friends the evil spirits drove him,
Among the tombs he dwelt in misery;
He cut himself as demon pow’rs possessed him,
Then Jesus came, and set the captive free.
Chorus
So men today have found the Savior able,
They could not conquer passion, lust and sin;
Their broken hearts had left them sad and lonely,
Then Jesus came and dwelt, Himself, within.
Chorus
