The Moon and Grace

As a college student in the early 1950’s, in speech class, I was told to prepare a speech on a subject of my own choosing, so I took the moon as my subject. I enjoyed researching the subject and talking about it, and that was almost 65 years ago. Since then, human beings have actually walked on the surface of the moon, scarcely a dream back in the days of my little talk.
We had an amazing full moon August 10, and it was the talk of the town in many places. I did not see it on the 10th, but I sneaked outside the following night and basked in the beauty of the rising moon amidst thin clouds. It was a beautiful sight indeed. Once again I was reminded of the magnificence of this wonderful world.
The earth, solar system, galaxy and vast universe declare the reality of God as Creator of all things. As Paul told us, “God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20 NIV).
Long ago the Biblical poet looked at the same moon we saw this week, and wrote about it: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:3-4 NIV).
A great gospel song puts all this into focus for me: “It took a miracle to put the stars in place; it took a miracle to hang the world in space. But when He saved my soul, cleansed and made me whole, It took a miracle of love and grace.”
