Zechariah was among those returning to Judah after the Exile. He came to Jerusalem with Haggai. They both worked with Zerubbabel the governor as the Temple was rebuilt. Zechariah was much younger than Haggai, and his work continued for many years after Haggai’s death. His prophecies joined those of Haggai to motivate the people to continue the work of rebuilding the Temple. Zechariah’s prophecies differed from Haggai, however, in that they were more like the prophecies of Ezekiel–making use of apocalyptic imagery, visions, illustrations, etc. See the footnote about his Messianic predictions. Perhaps Zechariah is best known among Christians for his specific prophecies of the Messiah.
Zechariah – A devotional thought
Haggai and Zechariah both were working to influence the governor and motivate the people to get to work. They had the same objective but employed different methods. In today’s world, the gospel of Christ is presented in many different ways, but all these are about Jesus. Let us rejoice, as did Paul, that the gospel is preached, even if it is presented in ways we might not choose ourselves.
