The book of Song of Solomon is a love poem. Solomon wrote it while he was king. It records the thoughts of a bridegroom desperately in love with his bride. It has sexual content, within the framework of marriage, which originated in the mind of God and is a sacred relationship in His eyes. This very human book is also a picture of God’s love for His people.
The Song of Solomon – Devotional thoughts
“Many waters cannot quench love, nor will rivers overflow it; if a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, it would be utterly despised” (8:7). One cannot overestimate the importance and value of love in a marriage.
Song of Solomon 2:1 offers a thought generally applied to Jesus Christ: “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” These descriptions have inspired the writing of poems and songs.
There’s a beautiful Rose ever blooming
In the garden of God’s love for me;
It has filled all the world with its fragrance,
It will last for eternity. (Alfred Smith and John Peterson)
I have found a friend in Jesus, He’s everything to me,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see
All I need to cleanse and make me fully whole.
In sorrow He’s my comfort, in trouble He’s my stay;
He tells me every care on Him to roll.
He’s the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star,
He’s the fairest of ten thousand to my soul. (Charles W. Fry).
