A New Beginning

In the movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” One of the main characters, Delmar, after being baptized, proclaims:

“Well that’s it boys, I been redeemed! The preacher warshed away all my
sins and transgressions. It’s the straight-and-narrow from here on out
and heaven everlasting’s my reward! .. Preacher said my sins are warshed away, including that Piggly Wiggly I knocked over in Yazoo!”

His friend, Everett, responds:

“I thought you said you were innocent a those charges.”

Then Delmar says:

“Well I was lyin’ – and I’m proud to say that that sin’s been warshed away too! Neither God nor man’s got nothin’ on me now! Come on in, boys, the water’s fine!”

It’s hard to argue with Delmar because he is so happy. He’s got a few facts wrong, but he will learn better later on. His feelings, however, are recognizable by those who have repented of their sins and know Jesus as Savior. I’ve seen that joy written on the faces of people as they emerged from the baptismal waters.

The video features children singing about the joy of knowing Jesus, but the experience of accepting Christ as Savior brings joy to the hearts of young and old. I once saw a lady 92 years of age walk down an aisle and profess her faith in Christ as her Savior. Then I watched a few days later as she was baptized and you could literally see the joy in her face as she came up out of the water and heard people singing, “O happy day that fixed my choice on Thee, my Savior and my God.”

Have you accepted Christ as your personal Savior? Do you know Jesus? Reminds me of a song: “Do you know my Jesus, Do you know my Friend, Have you heard He loves you, and that He will abide ’till the end.”
