Do you have times in your life when you are “down and out,” feeling low and depressed, shedding tears that come on their own out of nowhere? Are there days when you feel you really need a friend who listens and understands, someone with whom you can have an openly honest conversation? Jesus is near, awaiting your call.
Are you worried about losing loved ones? Or about tomorrow’s troubles? Does the thought of your own death haunt you and make you afraid? Do you sometimes think, I wish it were all over — why doesn’t Jesus come on back to us as He promised? Well, tell all that to Jesus. He’s your friend, your brother — one who understands and cares.
Turning your sorrows, doubts, and fears into prayers doesn’t always come naturally. It’s a discipline. A grand old German hymn from 1876, “Tell It to Jesus,” reminds and encourages Christians to share their heavy hearts in prayer with God.
TELL IT TO JESUS
Jeremiah Eames Rankin
1855
Are you weary? Are you heavy-hearted?
Tell it to Jesus. Tell it to Jesus.
Are you grieving over joys departed?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
He is a Friend that’s well known.
You have no other
Such a friend or brother.
Tell it to Jesus alone
Do the tears flow down
Your cheeks unbidden?
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
Have you sins that
To men’s eyes are hidden?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
He is a Friend that’s well known.
You have no other
Such a friend or brother.
Tell it to Jesus alone
Do you fear the
Gathering clouds of sorrow?
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
Are you anxious
What shall be tomorrow?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
He is a Friend that’s well known.
You have no other
Such a friend or brother.
Tell it to Jesus aloneAre you troubled
At the thought of dying?
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
For Christ’s coming kingdom
Are you sighing?
Tell it to Jesus alone.
Tell it to Jesus,
Tell it to Jesus.
He is a Friend that’s well known.
You have no other
Such a friend or brother.
Tell it to Jesus alone.
