Today’s the day. In all probability the big monster today will be rain. Maybe not. But maybe. Oh, well, it happens sometimes.
Exactly what is “Halloweeen,” anyway? The word is one of the shortcut words in our language. The real expression is “All Hallows Evening,” so we know by that expression it’s something about religion. It kicks off a special season remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. It probably has pagan roots. Maybe. Maybe not. The smart guys don’t agree about that.
Many people just think of it as a fun time to dress up in costumes and have parties or go door to door collecting treats that most people are ready and happy to provide.
The older I get the less I desire to delve deeply into the hidden meanings of things. Perhaps I should say the less I am able to think about such stuff. With all the really bad happenings in today’s world, something that seems to help people have a little fun seems OK to me.
Readers who wish to correct me may send their letters about witchcraft, demon worship, pagan influences and Satanic preachers to the White House. They’re used to such mail. Just send me some treats.
