Thanks to God

November 15, 2020 (Sunday)

We are slowly but surely approaching the season of Thanksgiving. As we contemplate our blessings, we are overwhelmed because God blesses us in so many ways. The hymn in today’s blog names one blessing after another and reminds us of His love for us.

Chuck Swindoll remarked about this song: As a little boy I recall thumbing through an old church hymnal. I came across a piece that has become one of my favorite Thanksgiving songs. First, because it is so simple, and second, because it is specific. It doesn’t simply ask us to count our blessings and name them one by one without helping us with some of those blessings that are ours. It has a Swedish origin. Just listen to a couple of the lines: “Thanks to God for my Redeemer, Thanks for all thou dost provide..”

We thank God for redeeming us with the precious blood of his own dear Son. We are thankful that Jesus is always with us and continues to provide for all our needs. we thank the Lord for those wonderful days of yesteryear that flood our hearts with sweet memories. We thank Him for the changing seasons of the year, each of which offers opportunities for praise. We thank Him for having been with us in our sorrows and hard times and giving us peace within.

We thank God for answered prayers and for giving us what is best for us even if it means denial of our requests. We thank Him for helping us endure the storms of life and for His bountiful supplies of blessings. We are thankful for His presence in our pain and in our pleasures, and for His comfort when we need it so very much.

We are so very thankful for the beauty of roses among the thorns. We thank Him for the safety and comfort of our homes and for joy in the midst of sorrow, giving us hope for all our tomorrows. We are so thankful for peace within our souls that will be with us the rest of our lives on earth and throughout all eternity in Heaven.

As you listen to the verses of this wonderful hymn, you will contemplate all the blessings mentioned in the paragraphs you have just read.

THANKS TO GOD FOR MY REDEEMER
A Swedish Hymn

Thanks to God for my Redeemer,
Thanks for all thou dost provide,
Thanks for times now but a memory,
Thanks for Jesus by my side.
Thanks for pleasant, balmy springtime,
Thanks for dark and dreary fall.
Thanks for tears by now forgotten,
Thanks for peace within my soul.

Thanks for prayers that thou hast answered,
Thanks for what thou dost deny,
Thanks for storms that I have weathered,
Thanks for all thou dost supply.
Thanks for pain; thanks for pleasure,
Thanks for comfort in despair,
Thanks for grace that none can measure,
Thanks for love beyond compare.

Thanks for roses by the wayside,
Thanks for thorns their stems contain!
Thanks for home and thanks for fireside,
Thanks for hope, that sweet refrain!
Thanks for joy and thanks for sorrow,
Thanks for heav’nly peace with Thee!
Thanks for hope in the tomorrow,
Thanks through all eternity!

Yes, that is I in the pic below. Just stopped shaving while quarantined. OK, now the beard needs to be trimmed if I keep it, but I have no idea about where and how much cutting should be done. Or I can just go ahead and shave it all off. Just wanted you to see it as I make up my mind.. HOVER OVER THE PICTURE
