The Statler Brothers have a song that goes like this:
When the sun wakes up in the west and lays its head down in the east
When they ordain Madlyn O’Hare and she becomes a priest
When a San Diego sailor comes home with no tattoo
When the lights go on at Wrigley Field I’ll be comin’ home to you.
In other words, the verse lists things that will never, never, ever happen in a million years. But the lights went on at Wrigley Field exactly 25 years ago today. So much for absolute certainty about the future.
There’s a saying, “Never say never.”
I suppose that’s a good old saying most of the time, but Jesus said “never” in a sentence that shapes the way Believers look at the future. Here’s what He said:
“Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die!” (John 11:26 NKJV).
The Greek text of this verse quotes Jesus as making this remarkable declaration in the strongest way possible in that language. He said it on purpose. He said it because it is true. Only He could say it and really mean it.
I believe Him. I hope you do, too.
