The phrase, “The Christian Hope,” is often spoken these days. What does it mean? As Christians we can have an attitude of confidence based on God’s promise in Christ to be with us and help us now and forevermore. This is a description of our hope.
“The Christian Hope” is expressed in Romans 8:38-39 NLT, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We belong to Him (John 10:28). He will not forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). We have hope:
- We have hope for today; “This is the day which the Lord has made” (Psalm 118:24).
- We have hope even in death; we are assured that to be “absent from the body” means that we will be “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
- We have hope for eternity; Christ has promised us a home in Heaven (John 14:3).
The hymn, “The Solid Rock,” expresses our hope: “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.”
Words: Edward Mote, 1834
Music: William B. Bradbury, 1863
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
