Letters

“Letters! We get letters! We get stacks and stacks of letters….” *
Remember that song from the Perry Como show years and years ago?
Well, back then we all got letters. I wrote many letters and cards and received many. People didn’t use the telephone, especially if it required long distance calling. We wrote letters. I created a file folder every year, labeled, “letters.” I have not done that in years. Nowadays people hardly ever write letters. They use email, facebook, twitter, telephone, skype, and other things of which I am probably not aware.
I knew I kept all my letters. I didn’t know that Wanda did, too. I found out when I discovered a box of her letters, all of them from me. Many of them were written before our marriage. One of them was not exactly a letter; it was an index card. On it was a hadwritten proposal of marriage. We had stopped at a cafe in Centerville, Texas, and I wrote it out and handed it to her. Ain’t love grand? Within weeks we were married.
Other letters in that box were written by me when I was away from home in revival meetings or conventions, etc. They are all love letters. We were married 48 years and 4 months when the Lord called her home.
Whenever folks get a letter today, it is usually a business letter or some kind or “junk mail.” There’s a lot of that. Too bad generations to come won’t be likely to discover a box of emails, twitters, blogs, and such. Perhaps we should record our phone calls and print our emails, etc. so that we can leave something of our thoughts and actions to our descendants.

Devotional Thought: Old love letters stir up emotions and remind us how much we love each other. The Bible is God’s love letter to us. As we read it, our hearts are stirred again to tell the Lord how much we love Him, and to thank Him for loving us so much.

*The rest of the song:

Dear Perry . . .
. Would you be so kind,
.. To fill a request,
… And sing the song I like best?
