PALM SUNDAY
“Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” (John 12:15 NIV)
On that first Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem seated upon a donkey.
The Book of Revelation says that, at the end of this age, Jesus will ride a white horse, the sign of a conqueror, but in the gospels he rode a donkey, symbol of peace.
The people became absolutely ecstatic when they saw him. They laid down their cloaks and cut limbs from palms to prepare his path. Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem marked the beginning of his final week of life that ended with his death, burial and resurrection.
Jesus came into Jerusalem that day, committed to the giving of himself as “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” He had set his face as a flint toward Jerusalem and nothing could have kept him from fulfilling his mission to provide salvation for us all.
As we recall the events in Jerusalem nearly 2000 years ago, let us rededicate ourselves to the doing of God’s will in our own lives. Jesus rode into Jerusalem upon a mission. He had been sent by the Father to save the world. He had said (probably many times during his ministry), “As the Father has sent me, so send I you.” As his people, let us approach life with the same kind of commitment.
My heart, my life, my all I bring to Christ who loves me so;
He is my Master, Lord, and King, Wherever He leads I’ll go.
Wherever He leads I’ll go, Wherever He leads I’ll go,
I’ll follow my Christ who loves me so, Wherever He leads I’ll go.
