The 18th and 21st Amendments

.
Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages. Prohibitionists first attempted to end the trade in alcoholic beverages during the 19th century. Prohibition began on January 17, 1920 with the 18th amendment and ended on December 5, 1933 when the 21st amendment repealed the amendment that had enabled it. The 21st amendment is the only amendment that repeals another amendment.

Although alcohol production, etc. was then allowed by the national government after the 21st amendment was passed, local governmental bodies could still prohibit the production and sale of alcoholic beverages. And so “wet” and “dry” counties, precincts or states, etc. developed for many years.

Prohibition in the USA failed because a majority of people like to drink and want alcoholic beverages to be available.

During the Prohibition era Americans found ways to break the prohibition laws and many law enforcement agencies condoned their illegal activities. When racketeers formed gangs that fought over territorial rights to distribute their products, law enforcement agencies were constantly involved with crimes arising from the illegality of alcohol.

And so, prohibition was abolished but the abundance of alcoholic beverages in our society has created many problems, and I will not begin listing them. It would take several pages to do so. This list would include drunk driving, which kills thousands every year. It might surprise you to discover that many other types of crime are committed by people “under the influence” who would not have broken the law if they had remained sober.

If the alcoholic beverage industry was made accountable and had to pay for the damage that is being done in so many, many ways, it would go bankrupt, because the abuses of the product affect all of us in one way or another.

Finland has created videos showing what drunk parents look like to their children. The videos show children who are seeing monsters of all kinds that take the place of Mom and Dad.

If you are a child of God, your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. And the Bible says, “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed for the Day of Redemption” (Ephesians 4:30 KJV).

When you see an intoxicated person making a fool of himself and offending people at the party, just remember, that’s probably you, when you have had too much. You just don’t remember it. But everyone else does.
