Will Rogers told our military that we could solve our problem with Nazi subs by boiling the oceans. When the subs bob to the surface, we could then pick them off. A reporter asked, “How do you propose to boil the oceans?” Will smiled and replied, “I’ve given you the solution. It’s up to you to work out the details.”
Will Rogers was a master of humor. His goal, evidently, was to get people to thinking about current issues by getting them to laugh.
Here in 2012, there’s not much laughing any more. We are so deadly serious about our feelings that we have successfully purged our culture of light-hearted moments. This is particularly true of politics.
One encouraging thought is that trends in culture seem to be cyclical. We go through phases. Like the tide that rises, then falls, then rises again, we seem to move through the tough times on to better times, which are lived out as more enjoyable times. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for some “happily ever after” stuff. We just need to work out the details. Thanks, Will.
