The Bridge

I didn’t build it

”picThe first time I ever saw the big bridge in Corpus Christi was in 1960, when I came to town for a Baptist convention. I was impressed by its size. At that time, the draw bridge below it was still in operation and the lift bridge up the channel was still going strong. The Harbor Bridge (also known as “Corpus Christi High Bridge,” “US Highway 181 Bridge,” and “Portland Bridge”) had become the main bridge for Corpus.
I never lived in this area or visited it before 1960. By 1964 I had moved here, and have made good use of the Harbor Bridge many times. I didn’t contribute to its being built, work on it, rivet it, paint it, or string lights on it, but it has been “my” bridge for 51 years. My thanks to those who conceived it, designed it, built it and continue to maintain it. These thoughts have brought to mind “The Bridge Builder,” a poem I love. You can read it by clicking here.
A great goal for all of us is to build bridges for others.
