The Transfiguration of Christ

..with Moses and Elijah..

”picTonight at prayer meeting, we will study Mark 9:1-12, which tells us about the Transfiguration of Christ and the appearance with him of Elijah and Moses.
Here’s what happened. Jesus took with him his “inner circle” of disciples (Peter, James and John), leading them up on a high mountain apart by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
Moses represented the Law, Elijah, the prophets, and Jesus, Grace. That’s a true statement but an oversimplification, because all of them were concerned and involved with the Law, Prophecy, and God’s Grace. They talked together. We are not told exactly what they said to each other, but their conversation was about God’s plan and purpose for this world through his one and only son, Jesus Christ.

His disciples no doubt found it quite impossible to keep their gaze fixed upon him. Perhaps to do so might have blinded them. Surely John was remembering this moment when he later wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1 NIV).
A cloud appeared, and they heard a voice from the cloud: “This is my Beloved Son; Listen to him!” When they looked around, they saw only Jesus, who whisked them away to the foot of the mountain, where, as always, somebody needed their help.
