Hummingbirds

They’re b-a-a-ack

August 29, 2011 (Monday)
”picRockport is known for the Hummingbird Festival in September each year. Dwight saw two hummingbirds in the back yard, so he put up a couple of feeders. Immediately two of them started chasing each other away from the feeder. That’s what Hummingbirds do. They don’t seem very interested in feeding; their main objective seems to be keeping the other one away. I’m speaking totally as a layman; I know nothing about Hummingbirds, except they are beautiful in flight as they hover like a helicopter. One amazing thing I know about them is the fact that they fly non-stop 500 miles across the Gulf of Mexico. I find that unbelievable.
Here’s a picture of one–I don’t know the exact name. hummer.jpg It looks a lot like the pair that have been zooming around the feeder on our patio. It may be one that never comes to Rockport, for all I know. Anyway, here’s a pic for what it’s worth–you already know what Hummingbirds look like.
I’ll leave the exact descriptions and interesting information about them to our resident authority, Dale Pogue. Perhaps he will again write something about them in his blog during September.
Dale knows what he’s talking about. I’m just a guy who says, “Oh, look! a bird! Look! He’s hovering in mid-air! Look! He’s drinking nectar! Oh, look!” “Wow!”
