Memorize the Bible?

June 8, 2020 (Monday)

Some things we never forget. I think it’s because of the way we learned those things in the first place. For instance, what are the notes on a treble scale or bass scale? I learned that in the 5th grade.

I remember the teacher drew 5 parallel lines on the blackboard, then taught us: Reading upwards, the lines are EGBDF (every good boy does fine) and the spaces are FACE (self-explanatory). Then she drew five more lines and told us they represent the bass scale: Still reading upwards, the lines are GBDFA (good boys do fine always) and the spaces are ACEG (all cows eat grass). In very few minutes, we had learned from her the complete scale of the treble and bass clefs. That was 79 years ago and I’m repeating it today — pretty good method?

I read today of a method (used by Dr. Andy Davis of Southern Seminary) for memorizing entire books of the Bible. The example given is the book of Ephesians. Open your Bible, read Ephesians 1:1 citing the reference ten times. Close your Bible and repeat the verse ten times, repeating the reference each time. The next day, repeat verse 1:1 ten times, then open your Bible and read Ephesians 1:2 ten times. Follow the same process with each verse, always repeating all the verses learned to date. If I counted correctly there are 157 verses in Ephesians. Memorizing one verse each day will take slightly more than 5 months, at no more than 15 minutes per day. If we start today, you and I will have memorized the book of Ephesians by November 11. Would you like to try it with me? If we are successful by November 11, then we shall recite the entire book for 100 days, and that would bring us to February 19. Then we can start on another book of the Bible. Let’s give it a try, what do you say?

Holy Bible, Book Divine
John Burton
1803

Holy Bible, Book divine,
Precious treasure, thou art mine:
Mine to tell me whence I came;
Mine to teach me what I am.

Mine to chide me when I rove,
Mine to show a Savior’s love;
Mine thou art to guide and guard;
Mine to punish or reward.

Mine to comfort in distress,
Suffering in this wilderness;
Mine to show by living faith,
We can triumph over death.

Mine to tell of joys to come,
And the rebel sinner’s doom:
O thou Holy Book divine,
Precious treasure, thou art mine.
