As Christians we understand the importance of the Bible. It contains all the information we need to understand our faith. But we really need to understand those 66 books of the Bible. We need to study the history of God’s people and then look at each book of the Bible within its context. This requires more than just reading it for the sake of having read it. It requires our serious study so that we learn all we can learn about it. We must know what it said when it was written so that we can apply what it means for us today.
The Book Our Mothers Read
by John Greenleaf Whittier
We search the world for truth; we cull
The good, the pure, the beautiful,
From graven stone and written scroll,
From all old flower-fields of the soul;
And, weary seekers of the best,
We come back laden from the quest,
To find that all the sages said
Is in the Book our mothers read.
Ancient Words
Lynn DeShazo
circa 2005
Holy words long preserved
for our walk in this world,
They resound with God’s own heart
Oh, let the ancient words impart.
Words of life, words of hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world, where e’er we roam
Ancient words will guide us home.
Ancient words, ever true
Changing me, and changing you.
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.
The Bible is our guide and our support. One of the great things that “Ancient Words” brings out with the two simple words “long preserved” is the history of individuals who have sacrificed so much to ensure it was available for each of us to read in our own languages.
