Mothers Day

May 10, 2020 (Sunday)

Our daughter, Dianna, has a birthday today. She was almost born on Mothers Day. There have been many Mothers Days, like this one, throughout her life that coincide with her birthday. Years ago she wrote this piece for her mother, and it has been hanging on our wall ever since.

In case my poor photography obscures the verses, here it is in plain print:

W’s for Wonderful, Witty and Wise
A is for all of her excellent pies
N’s for the Nurturing way that she loves
D is for Dolls with their hats & their gloves
A’s for Advice….”If you say that you’ll do it,
Then no matter what, you’d better get to it.”

J is for Jewelry, there’s never enough
A’s for Allelujah, and other choir stuff
N is for Needles she needs to crochet
E’s for how Early she starts out each day

F’s for the Fancy clothes that she sews
A is for All of the plants that she grows
K is for Kids….she raised five to the end
E is for Excellent mother and friend.

M-O-T-H-E-R
“M” is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold;
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.
