July 21, 2020 (Tuesday)
I give you today the song, “Once Upon A Time,” from the 1962 musical, “All American.”
There is something about this song that touches the heart and reminds the hearers of some beautiful experiences of long ago. It became very popular and I counted at least 51 artists who recorded it, in an article about it.
You and I have had some beautiful experiences along life’s way, and if hearing this song again reminds you of some pleasant memories, “You’re welcome.”
Perhaps you were reminded of the song, “Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end” (April 3 blog). Obviously that song is about the good old days, because we would prefer remembering them instead of bad days.
Maybe you thought of Andy Williams singing,*
“Sweet memories
Of holding hands and red bouquets
And twilight trimmed in purple haze
And laughing eyes and simple ways
And quiet nights and gentle days with you
Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind
Memories, sweetened thru the ages just like wine,
Memories, memories, sweet memories
I hope you felt the brush of angels’ wings when you thought of your experiences with Christ, and the hymn, “Precious Memories, how they linger, how they ever flood my soul.” **
But, back to the song that reminded us of the blessings that have been ours through the years.
Once Upon A Time
Words: Charles Strouse
Music: Lee Adams
1962
Once upon a time a girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine and said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time, very long ago
Once upon a hill we sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone
How the breeze ruffled up her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn’t there
We were young and didn’t have a care
Where did it go?
Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours, how happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time never comes again
** Listen to “Precious Memories”
