Finding strength in the Lord

”picToday is the last day of January. A cold week is predicted, but soon the weather will probably be pretty nice. Through the years, the church at Rockport usually scheduled big church-wide activities for the second or third week of February, because the weather was nice in most years, and the “Winter Texans” were still in town in sufficient numbers to boost attendance. Here’s hoping the weather follows that pattern this year. If it does, we can plan on some very beautiful days. If not, then we will enjoy whatever kind of weather comes our way.
Taking life as it comes, and adjusting to it, is the key to contentment. I like the words of Paul, written under difficult circumstances in his life: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:11-13).
The words, “through him who gives me strength,” are a vital part of Paul’s statement. Some people are determined to stand alone amidst the trials of life. I recall asking a man about to undergo surgery if I might pray with him. He replied, “You may if you like, but I’ve found that if I’m going to pass through the valley of the shadow of death, I feel better if I have a good surgeon.” I suppose he was not alone in his fierce independence from faith.
Personally, I believe the Lord wants us to use everything at our disposal to meet the challenges of life, and, while doing that, depend on the Lord for wisdom and strength, seeking to honor and glorify him through it all. I think of a spiritual song that has been my guide many times: “Where could I go but to the Lord?”
