Come and Worship

Let Us Adore Him

December 21, 2010 (Tuesday)
”picHave you ever sung this verse of “O Come All Ye Faithful?” Deum de Deo, lumen de lúmine, gestant puellae viscera. Deum verum, genitum non factum: Veníte adoremus, Veníte adoremus, Veníte adoremus, Dóminum! Betcha you haven’t sung it that way. How about the English translation of that verse? Ever sung, “God of God, Light of Light, Lo, he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; Very God, Begotten, not created: Oh, come, let us adore Him, Oh, come, let us adore Him, Oh, come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord?” Betcha you never have sung that verse in English either.
First known as “Adeste Fidelis,” probably written in the 1300’s, this great Christmas song has endured the test of time and is still a favorite of people everywhere. We like to sing it like this:

Oh, come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold Him
Born the King of Angels:
Oh, come, let us adore Him,
Oh, come, let us adore Him,
Oh, come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

“O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms… O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker” (Psalm 95:1,2,6 KJV).
