In Times Like These

March 29, 2020 (Sunday)

I saw Fred Ater’s facebook photo of a page in the hymnal that featured a lovely hymn that seems altogether appropriate for the times in which we are now living.  Here it is:

There was a time in many churches when this song was often sung in worship services.  I suggest that we have come to a new time in which the words of this song are just right to express what God’s children are feeling in their hearts.  It would be nice to hear this song again in a worship service.

In times like these, you need a Savior.  In times like these, you need an anchor.  Be very sure, be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid rock.  This rock is Jesus.  Yes, He’s the One.  This rock is Jesus, the only One!  Be very sure, be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid Rock!

Do you recall reading about the Apostle Paul’s experience when he earnestly prayed that he could be free from his “thorn in the flesh,” no doubt a debilitating illness of some kind, only to hear the Lord say to him, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

By God’s grace our souls are anchored to Christ.  He is, has been, and always will be the source of our strength to meet any and every trial that comes our way.

His grace is sufficient for our every need. He never leaves us or forsakes us. Our Lord is with us, cares about us, and helps us. In times like these, this assurance comforts and energizes us.

In Times Like These
Ruth Caye Jones
1944

In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these I have a Savior,
In times like these I have an anchor;
I’m very sure, I’m very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

The first time Ruth Caye Jones heard her song sung on television, tears came to her eyes. “I can’t believe I had any part in writing this song. I just feel that God gave it to me, and I gave it to the world.”
