October is here

..It’s great to be alive!

October 1, 2010 (Friday)
”pic“Thirty days hath September..” Hath? How about, “had!” It’s gone. September came. And went. So quickly, it seemed to me.
My first October was in 1931. I don’t remember it. This will be my 80th October. I hope I can remember it. I do remember my first October in Rockport. It was in 1964. I recall how the weather changed from stormy September to calm and peaceful October, and one could look out over the bays in the morning and it seemed they were made of glass. So calm and smooth. Cool mornings and good weather day after day.
Soon, if not already, “Winter Texans” will come to this beautiful little town. Their numbers increase year after year. I learned after a few years here in Rockport that not all winters are the same. Some are so mild and beautiful that you get to thinking they are all that way. But a few winters have been so dreary and foggy that people cannot help but be disappointed, especially if they have traveled a thousand miles or more to get here. I remember one man from Iowa who was so impressed with the beautiful weather one winter that he came back the next year and urged many others to come also. His second winter was one of those damp, foggy ones, and he was very disappointed. When he spoke to me about it, I got the feeling he was holding me accountable, but “Somebody bigger than you and I” controls the weather.
Even the foggy days are beautiful days if you look for the beauty. I included a few photographs I made on foggy days at the Rockport Harbor in this blog not long ago. The pictures are beautiful, if I do say so myself. As the song says, “Everything is beautiful in its own way.”
Welcome, October, it’s good to see you again. Whether your weather is delightful or not, we will enjoy you.
It’s good to be alive. I hope you feel that way. Let’s all thank the Lord for life itself. It’s great.
Our days on earth will someday be completed, but our life never ends. Jesus said so. The moment Christ came into our hearts by faith, we began to live forever. Eternal life for believers has already begun. It shall never end. It’s so good to have this confidence. Have you received Jesus Christ into your heart by faith? You can. Right now. “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
