The Light of the World Is Jesus

January 19, 2020 (Sunday)

On this date, January 19, 1883 The first electric lighting system employing overhead wires, built by Thomas Edison, began service at Roselle, New Jersey. From that small beginning, our nation has been supplied with electric power that has become indispensible in virtually every area of our daily lives. Essentially, Edison declared, “Let there be light,” and electric power to homes and businesses got its tiny start, supplying power to only a few blocks of a city. That was almost 137 years ago.

Someone else once said, “Let there be light,” and instantaneously there was light. If you like, you can see a composite photograph of the earth at night in all time zones. The cities stand out and the experience is almost like looking at a map because the viewer can identify the bright spots, such as Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles. Light is all over the world, with a few exceptions.

We quite naturally associate darkness with negative thinking and light with positive thinking. Morally, darkness represents sin, and light represents salvation. Jesus is the light of the world, having come to us to dispel darkness and has commissioned us to “walk in the light.” The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (Selected verses from John 1, NIV).

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD IS JESUS
Philip P. Bliss
1875

The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin,
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Like sunshine at noonday, His glory shone in;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Chorus:
Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee;
Sweetly the light has dawned upon me;
Once I was blind, but now I can see:
The Light of the world is Jesus!

No darkness have we who in Jesus abide;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
We walk in the light when we follow our Guide!
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Chorus

Ye dwellers in darkness with sin-blinded eyes,
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Go, wash at His bidding, and light will arise;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Chorus

No need of the sunlight in Heaven we’re told;
The Light of the world is Jesus!
The Lamb is the Light in the city of gold,
The Light of the world is Jesus!
Chorus
