A special day for just about everything.
July 26, 2007 (Thursday) – Tuesday was “Mosquito Day.” Every day is now “Mosquito Day” in Rockport. I wrote my blog on them a little early (Pesky Critters June 16). Didn’t know we had a special day on the calendar for them. In fact, there is a special day for just about everything. And special weeks. And special months. You can find them here.
This month is National Picnic Month, National Anti-Boredom month, and 27 other special months. This week is “Don’t Eat Meat Week,” among other things. Today is National Coffee Milkshake Day, All or Nothing Day, and Aunt and Uncle Day as well as other special days.
Every day’s a holiday if we want it to be. For instance, you have your birthday once a year, but you have your “unbirthday” every day before and after your birthday. Remember in “Alice in Wonderland,” the Mad Hatter and his friends celebrated that “special” day, every day.
The fact of the matter is, every day is unique, but not all days are equal. Some days are remembered and some are forgotten. Some are special and some are not. We cannot, no matter how hard we may try, make every day, week or month extra special. If every one of them is special, then they are all equal in importance. If they are all special, then none is special.
You don’t put an exclamation point after every sentence. If you do, the end result is exactly the same as if you used no exclamation points at all. Every sentence is equal to all the other sentences.
What about special people? Surely we can think of every individual as special in some way. Right you are. And we do need to treat each person as special in his or her own way. That makes each person unique in your eyes, but not equal to each other in every way. Everyone is special, but not in the same way. So, in that case, you could make a list of people you know and put an exclamation point after every name, because each person is unique, with his/her own set of gifts, talents, and abilities. We have a unique relationship with each person. We don’t feel exactly the same way about everyone. But we can love and appreciate every person. Jesus certainly does that, and he still does it today, through you and through me.
Rejoice on this very special day, “the day the Lord has made.” Be thankful for every person you see and greet today, because they all are special in their own way. Circle this day in red and put a gold star by it, because God has shown you that He loves you by giving you this day. Call it what you will, but thank the Lord for it; it’s His gift to you.
