The hymn for this weekend is, “Silent Night, Holy Night” The song was written in Austria 200 years ago. A story about it that always comes to mind at this time of year happened on a battlefield of World War 1.
The opposing groups of soldiers were resting on Christmas Eve when the Germans began singing the song in German. The British took up the song and soon they were singing together. After a while they broke ranks, came into the open and celebrated Christmas Eve together.
Joseph Mohr 1816 Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin Mother and Child, holy Infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia. Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light, Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. Silent night, holy night, wondrous star, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing, Alleluia to our King. Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born. |
