Better

Your choice?

picture of CharlesAs I listened to my car radio yesterday, I heard a song. The last word I heard before pushing the button for another station was, “better.” When I changed stations, I a different song was playing and the first word I heard was, “better.” “Better” seems to be a popular word for songs. Remember, “Hey, Jude?” Its words are “better, better, better, better, better, better, oh.”
“Better” is an encouraging word. The economy is going to get “better.” You are sick but you are going to get “better.” Every song I hear is “better” than the last one. Each day is going to be “better” than the day before. “Better” is an optimistic word. It’s a happy word. It’s a great word.
The word, “better,” appears 129 times in the New International Version of the Bible. A verse we all love very much is, Luke 10:42, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Remember what the situation was? Martha was upset with Mary, because she was sitting at the feet of Jesus instead of helping her in the kitchen. Jesus made clear what he considered “better,” and that’s the spiritual side of our lives.
Remember the last verse of 1 Corinthians 12? It says, “and now I will show you the most excellent way.” What follows is the marvelous thirteenth chapter, “The Love Chapter.” Genuine self-giving love is not just “better;” it’s “best.”
We have choices in life. We can choose a bad way, a worse way, or the worst way. We are thankful we can also choose a good way, a better way, or the best way. What are you choosing today?
