July 6, 2008 (Sunday)
On this Independence Day weekend, it is good for us as Americans to think about Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (NIV). As “The Message” translates this verse, it says, “God-devotion makes a country strong; God-avoidance leaves people weak.”
Sin disgraces a nation. I don’t think anyone would argue against the fact that, generally speaking, beliefs about morality have changed. Many believe today’s standards are an improvement; those who believe the Bible would disagree. The Scriptures warn that judgment always follows in the wake of sin. We reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). It is good for us to remember that great world empires crumbled from within, as the people and their leaders forgot the values which had made them great.
Righteousness exalts a nation. Let us take action to improve the quality of life in our nation by buiding great homes, because a nation can be no stronger than its homes. Let us love our country and work to make it better. Let us worship our God. There is much “lip service” to God today. “Practical atheism “ is prevalent, as we say God exists and then live as if He doesn’t. What God wants from us is what the ancient prophets urged: “But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (Amos 5:24 NIV).
Righteousness is what God wants; is it important to us? What can we do? We can teach our children to love God. We can strengthen our nation by participation as Christian citizens. We can make righteousness a priority in our own lives, and we can deepen our spiritual lives as we submit to the Lordship of Christ, become His dedicated disciples and influence others to follow Him by our sincere devotion. Proverbs 14:34 states a pivotal, vital truth on this special weekend.
