The small stuff

Lord, help us to “chill out”

June 26, 2008 (Thursday)
picture of CharlesWritten on Wednesday from my home in Rockport: ”This is the day the Lord hath made; I will rejoice and be glad in it.” I’m repeating that scripture to myself today, because so far it’s “one o’ them days” when so much goes wrong. First, the drain on the A/C stopped up and soaked the carpet in the hall. Four teen age grandchildren are coming today to stay for a week, so I really would prefer the carpet to be dry. After working on that a couple of hours, I think I got it patched up for a while. Then I tackled the problem with the 1991 mini van, which had lost all its brake fluid. I had a little on hand so I poured it into the master cylinder reservoir before driving it to the repair shop, but even with a new battery, it refused to start. So I jump started it, but when I disconnected it and drove my Mercury away, I backed up into my RV bumper. I heard a little noise and looked back to see my car against the RV bumper. At that point, I could have gotten out of the car, looked over the situation, and maneuvered with only a scratch by the rear tire, but then my male instincts kicked in, and instead of getting out to see exactly what had happened, I pulled forward, damaging both vehicles. All this in the summer heat of 1001 degrees. Men never learn. We always do it that way: shoot first and ask questions afterward.
Well, I’m sure that by the time you read this all will be well. I got the van to the shop for repairs and I think I can put a screw here and there on the Mercury and make it look a little better. Now it looks like the old car it is. I’ll get around to the RV bumper sooner or later. So, no big deal. These are the little things I think the Bible may be talking about when it mentions “the little foxes” that spoil the vines.
Pretty small stuff when compared to the real and gigantic problems many people are facing today. Reminds me of the letter home a coed sent, about the dorm fire, abortion, and auto accident. Then in the next paragraph she wrote that none of those things had happened, but she did fail a course, and she just wanted her parents to keep that news in perspective. So let’s all keep the little annoyances of life in perspective, OK?
