Jesus says to his followers, “I speak to you as friends, and I command you to love one another” (John 15:15-17).
A friend is defined as, “one attached to another by affection or esteem,” or, “a favored companion.” Jesus is our friend.
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is a Christian hymn originally written by Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. Scriven himself was in need of Jesus as his friend when twice his bride-to-be was tragically taken from this life. Instead of becoming bitter, he became better, dedicating his life to helping others.
