Please Be My Refuge, LORD – Psalm 142

cffblog6.jpgJune 26, 2019 (Wednesday)

(From the Cambridge Bible Commentary):
In profound despondency the Psalmist lays his trouble before Jehovah (Psalm 142:1-2), though Jehovah well knows all the circumstances of his life, and the dangers which beset him in his isolation and defencelessness (Psalm 142:3-4). Jehovah has been and is his only hope, and to Him he looks for deliverance which will enable him to give thanks publicly in the midst of rejoicing sympathisers (Psalm 142:5-7).

Psalm 142

New International Version (NIV)
A maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.

I. MY TROUBLE IS REAL, O LORD (1-2)
1 I cry aloud to the Lord;
I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.
2 I pour out before him my complaint;
before him I tell my trouble.

II. I NEED YOUR PROTECTION, O LORD (3-4)

3 When my spirit grows faint within me,
it is you who watch over my way.
In the path where I walk
people have hidden a snare for me.
4 Look and see, there is no one at my right hand;
no one is concerned for me.
I have no refuge;
no one cares for my life.
III. YOU ARE MY ONLY HOPE, O LORD (5-7)
5 I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.”
6 Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;
rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.
7 Set me free from my prison,
that I may praise your name.
Then the righteous will gather about me
because of your goodness to me.

The Solid Rock
Words: Edward Mote, 1834
Music: William B. Bradbury, 1863

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
