Apple Dumpling Day

National Apple Dumpling Day is observed annually on September 17th. These delicious filled pastries are typically made by putting cored and peeled apples on a piece of dough, sprinkling them with cinnamon and sugar, then folding the dough over the apples to form a dumpling. The dumplings are then oven baked until tender.
Apple dumplings are believed to be native to the northeastern United States, around Pennsylvania. Often found among the delicious Amish recipes, it is frequently eaten as a breakfast item. However, they are also regularly eaten as a dessert and sometimes served with ice cream.
Apple-Dumplings-2.jpgWanda used to make Apple Dumplings. She didn’t do it often so when we had one for dessert we enjoyed it all the more, because it would be a while before we had another.
It was one of the most delicious items she ever made. I really enjoyed it.
I have not tried to make an apple dumpling, but I do make an apple dessert every once in a while. It is very tasty if I do say so myself. It may qualify as Apple Crisp, I don’t know. I wrote about this back in January. First, cut the peeled apple into bite-size pieces. Place them in a bowl. Sprinkle salt over the pieces (not too much). Now sprinkle cinnamon over the apples. Then sprinkle sugar over that, and drizzle a little water over the whole thing. Then crumble graham crackers over the mixture and finally top the stuff with slices of butter. You may prefer waiting until now to drizzle the water. Give it about 5 minutes in the microwave. Let it cool a little, put some vanilla ice cream on top and there you are. Does not qualify as a recipe, but tastes good just the same. I think I left out something, but never mind, do as you like. Apples are so good you can’t lose.
One of these days perhaps I will make real Apple Crisp, or maybe even an Apple Dumpling. But so far most of my attempts to do actual real cooking with a genuine recipe have not turned out very well.
I did a search for “apple desserts” and found a page with ten recipes for ten different kinds of apple desserts. Every one of them looked great in the pictures. But as long as I have a few graham crackers and apples, I’ll probably stay satisfied with the easy stuff.
