June 7, 2018 (Thursday)
Discovered that today is “Grilled Corn on the Cob Day.” The recipe that came with the announcement: Preparation Directions: 1. Soak ears, husk and all, in a bucket of water for 10 – 30 minutes. 2. Turn the grill on to a medium heat setting. 3. Remove ears from water. (Do not husk them). Place the ears on the grill. 4. Cook for ten to twelve minutes, turning every two minutes. 5. Allow to cool for a couple minutes, just enough so you can pull off the husk without burning your fingers. 6. Serve with butter and salt.
I do not intend to follow the recipe. I have my own: 1. Go to store and buy frozen corn on the cob. 2. Bring home and place in boiling water. 3. Put on plate and smear with butter. 4. Enjoy.
For extra enjoyment, buy more than one package and put them all in the freezer. When you feel the craving for good old corn on the cob, remove from freezer and follow my instructions. Enjoy again. And again. (Next Monday is National Corn on the Cob Day).
Craving physical food is sort of like craving spiritual food. Life throws you a curve, and suddenly you feel the need of spiritual advice and help. Where do you go? To your Bible, of course.
Here’s a verse I first heard long ago. It’s still valid:
“We search the world for truth;
We cull the good, the pure, the beautiful,
From all old flower fields of the soul;
And weary seekers of the best,
We come back laden from our quest,
To find that all the sages said,
Is in the book our mothers read.”
John Greenleaf Whittier
“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”‘ (Matthew 4:4, NIV)
“Without God’s Word we are weak, ignorant vessels, losing our way in this complex world system dedicated to keep us from discovering and living the truth. Do I understand that I need God’s Word as much as physical food in order to live properly in this world?” (Phil’s blog).
Repeating, “You feel the need of spiritual advice and help. Where do you go? To your Bible” (Charles’ blog today).
