Miles to Go Before I Sleep

Robert Frost was one of the greatest poets of history, and certainly put into words many of the things we love about life and our country. I just want to share one of his best poems with you today. Perhaps you have already memorized it for some reason, or maybe (but not likely) you’ve never read or heard it before.
I’ll never forget watching my old black and white TV the day President Kennedy invited Robert Frost to the White House. I was awestruck. Here he was, really. Live, in person. How thankful I am that I had the privilege of seeing and hearing him that day. He quoted or read some of his best poetry that day, describing experiences we felt we were having as he spoke. Here’s the poem I said I would share:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
