Yesterday’s blog presented the song, “To The Work.” A song with much the same emphasis is “Send the Light!” As in yesterday’s video, the words of “Send the Light” are included in the video itself, so that you may sing along if you like. If you are like me, you love singing the old songs that we know by heart. We need also to remember that the Bible exalts the new as well as the old: “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth” (Psalm 96:1 NIV).
This is a missionary hymn. It is the mission program of Christ that motivated Christians in the United States to get together and send missionaries around the world. Watch the video below and hear Ben Speer and his singers present this song to inspire us.
The words and music of this hymn were written by Charles H. Gabriel in 1888. That was 130 years ago, and at that time mission work was very much in the forefront of the churches’ work as missionaries were being called to countries far away as well as near. The title of this hymn should be our Watchword as God’s people.
