I’ve often wondered, “How many hymns and songs about the Cross exist?” I know they are often listed among our favorite hymns. We first saw the light “At The Cross.” We take our stand “Beneath the Cross.” We love “The Old Rugged Cross” because it was there that Christ died for us. May our hearts remain always “Near the Cross.”
NEAR THE CROSS
Words by Fanny Crosby
Music by William H. Doane
1869
Chorus:
In the cross, in the cross,
Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.
Verses:
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain–
Free to all, a healing stream–
Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.
Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and Mercy found me;
There the bright and morning star
Sheds its beams around me.
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day,
With its shadows o’er me.
Near the cross I’ll watch and wait
Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.
