I Heard the Voice of Jesus

I was saved at eleven, but did not attend church much until I was almost seventeen years old. Immediately after I rededicated my life and began attending church, I was asked to sing a solo. I replied that I did not know any church songs. We then worked together to find out what I did know, and a song was suggested that uses the same tune as the song, “Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes.” The name of the hymn is, “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.” Since I was familiar with that tune, I rehearsed the song and, at the first opportunity, sang it in church. This song, then, is the first solo I ever sang at church. (I have since learned many songs).

I HEARD THE VOICE OF JESUS SAY
Horatio Bonar
John B. Dykes
1846-1848

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary and worn and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
And He has made me glad.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
And all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk,
Till trav’ling days are done.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“My Father’s house above
Has many mansions; I’ve a place
Prepared for you in love.”
I trust in Jesus–in that house,
According to His word,
Redeemed by grace, my soul shall live
Forever with the Lord.

I could not find a recording of this song with the tune I described above. I did, however, find one that presents two tunes. It begins with the standard tune heard in most places today. After a little more than 2 minutes, the singer presents the song with the tune that I described above in the opening paragraph of this blog. Click here to hear this.
