Elvina Hall was in the choir when the words to this hymn came to her. With no writing tablet handy, she wrote the words in the flyleaf of her hymnal, and handed it to her pastor after church that day. It just so happened that John T. Grape had shared a new tune with the pastor recently, and when he compared the words with the music, it was a perfect fit. And so “Jesus Paid It All” was born as one of our most favorite hymns.
Jesus Paid It All
Words by Elvina M. Hall (1820-1899)
Music by John T. Grape
1868
Chorus:
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
Verses:
I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”
For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.
And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
My lips shall still repeat.
