Elizabeth P. Prentiss was the wife of a minister. She wrote these verses in a single evening in 1902, but kept it to herself for 13 years. William H. Doane, who wrote music for 2,000 hymns, worked with her to turn the poem into a hymn. She experienced sad loss and painful illness in her lifetime, but her love for Christ was always growing. Surely our prayer is like hers: “More love to thee, O Christ.”
